Camp Woodward

My kid is back from a week at Camp Woodward - the place for skateboarders, BMX bikers, BMX freestyle, inline skating, snowboarding, cheerleaders.

The camp is surrounded by farmland and the mountains of Pennsylvania, and along route 104 we could see Amish buggies and cyclists. The camp has everything an X-games kid could want. Indoor and outdoor ramps...

A pool ... horse stables ... go-carts ... and a video game arcade

His camp counselor was on the Dew tour and is sponsored. My son learned a lot and most of the kids were nice. There were kids from as far away as Australia and Scotland, and they were really good.

He and his friend weren't the best ones there, but he learned a lot. He showed us some of the skills he learned...

I hope he wants to go back next year. If he does, I'm thinking of staying and the lodge.

This place rocks! Can you be a beginner and still attend?

Yes, you can be a beginner and still attend. My kid went with a friend and he said that skill-wise, they were the worst but they still had fun. There were some kids there that had turned pro. Most kids were nice, although there were some cliques. While there wasn't a lot of instruction, staff members were always happy to provide feedback. Right now, my kid wants to go back next year...but a year is still a long time off.

I would say that if you child is a beginner snowboarder but has some experience, she will be OK. Do keep in mind that some of the kids are seriously good at their x-game. There is a lot of free time and not a lot of instruction, so this is a good camp for kids who like to hang out all day and use the ramps and can handle unstructured time. If your daughter reaches out and interacts with others, she'll probably be OK. Maybe she could go with a friend. My kid definitely wants to go to Woodward!!!! He talks about it just about every day and I see him looking at the web sites and the brochures!
